The Austrian Pharmacological Society (APHAR) was founded in 1995 and is based in the Institute of Pharmacology of the Medical University of Vienna.

The aim of APHAR is the promotion and public representation of experimental and clinical research in pharmacology in Austria and its representation in international umbrella organisations.

APHAR is member of the International Union of Pharmacology (IUPHAR), the Federation of European Pharmacological Societies (EPHAR) and the European Association of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (EACPT).

Hans Horst Meyer Award The awardee for 2026 is: Sivakumar SRINIVASAN (Department of Pharmacology, Medical University of Vienna) for his paper: "Vesicular glutamate transporter VGLUT2 expression emerges in substantia nigra dopamine neurons in mouse models of parkinsonism in the absence of neurodegeneration" (Br J Pharmacol, 2026; 183(9):​2123–2138)

Honorary Membership: Prof. Michael Freissmuth The honorary membership was conferred on 28 September 2026 by the president of the Austrian Pharmacological Society, Prof. Ákos Heinemann. Prof. Veronika Sexl then delivered a laudatory speech honoring Prof. Freissmuth’s achievements in the field of pharmacological research in Austria.
