"Science with Responsibility – Clinical Research at the Interface of Science, Ethics and Regulation" (organised by Eva-Maria Zebedin)

Drug development requires balancing scientific innovation, ethical principles, regulatory requirements, and the perspectives of multiple stakeholders, including patients and the pharmaceutical industry. This interactive workshop is intended for participants interested in drug development and clinical or translational research. No prior expertise in ethics or regulatory science is required.

The first part will provide a concise introduction to the ethical, scientific, and regulatory frameworks that shape drug development.

In the second part, participants will work in small groups on realistic case scenarios from the perspectives of investigators, sponsors, regulators, ethics committees, clinicians, or patients. They will present and discuss their positions and jointly reach a decision, mirroring real-world drug development.

Cases may address preclinical data packages, first-in-human trials, placebo use, vulnerable populations, evidence gaps, or early access to promising therapies. The aim is to explore areas of agreement and conflict and to develop transparent, well-reasoned approaches to complex decisions. The workshop offers a practical opportunity to experience how such decisions are negotiated across disciplines and stakeholder perspectives.

Participation is free of charge for participants registered for the APHAR 2026 Scientific Symposium. However, in order to allow for making the necessary arrangements, please

register here for this workshop
